MSc – Applied Economics
The programme in Economics of CDS currently offers a MSc in Applied Economics. This programme has been tailored keeping in view the global demand for economists from private and public sector. It will equip students in advanced research work and train them to become professional economists to meet the market requirements. The curriculum for the programme has been designed such that the students should be independently able to undertake analysis of economic issues using the latest methodologies and analytical frameworks. The course ensures that the latest economic events are used to build the student’s understanding of applied economics and enhance their analytical strengths. The programme is spread over four semesters with 19 compulsory papers (61 credits) and 4 specialization papers (12 credits) besides 4 audit courses. Two papers on Data Analytics will equip the students with the latest analytical tools.
Applied Economics @ PES relates the tenets of economics applied to real world situations and seeks solutions for the complex economic problems in a laboratory mode. Economics students have a compulsory 3 credit Economics Laboratory course in all the semesters. Papers on Indian Database and Data Analytics will ensure that CDS students will hit the ground running at their respective workplaces and contribute effectively to their future organisations.

The Centre for Development Studies at PES University is headed by Dr. R S Deshpande. He brings deep knowledge, 40 years teaching – research experience and close understanding in the field of development studies for graduating students. He has won prestigious awards and delivered influential Coveted Invited lectures. Tenures as visiting faculty at renowned universities in India and abroad have helped him stay current with the latest developments and provide academic leadership in the field. He has to his credit many books / monographs, and research articles that have won wide acclaim among students, scholars and practitioners. His work as consultant to the World Bank, ADB and Australian Land Equity organisation have been quite acclaimed. During his five-year tenure as Director of ISEC he brought far reaching administrative and academic reforms. His fields of interest include Agricultural Development Policy; Development Economics, Agricultural Statistics and applied Econometrics; Statistical Systems and Micro-level Planning; International Trade; Agricultural Production and Resource Economics; Social Economics. Professor. This programme is tailored keeping in view the global demand for economists from private and public sector. The curriculum is designed to prepare the student to undertake analysis of economic issues using the latest methodologies. The course is structured to constantly upgrade the knowledge of economic events in the world through continuous interactions and enhance their analytical strengths. The programme is spread over four semesters with 16 compulsory papers (64 credits) and 4 specialization papers (16 credits) besides 4 audit courses. Each Semester will have a specialization, audit course.
First year of the course focuses on in-depth understanding of Micro Economics, Macro Economics, Basics of Econometrics & Mathematical Economics, International Trade Theories & Empirics, Development Economics and India’s Development experience. This will also be supported with two specialisation papers. Second year of the course will equip the students with Advanced Econometrics, Public Economics, Monetary Economics, Game Theory Applications, Optimisation, Forecasting, Industrial Economics and Research Methodology. The final semester of the course will have a dissertation carrying 20 credits with guidance from expert faculty.
This programme is initiated under the continuous guidance of a former Director of an internationally reputed research institution in economics and social sciences. Keeping in view the evolving economic environment and India’s increasing integration with global economy, the M.Sc. Applied Economics course is designed with emphasis on emerging national and global economic challenges.
