Any Other Information :
Media responses:
The work carried out on “Identification of Tropomyosin as the major shrimp allergen and characterization of its IgE binding epitopes” has been regarded as a land mark contribution which was cited both by National Media and also by New York times, USA and National Institute of Health, Washington, USA

Novel Contributions In The Area Of Allergy, Immunodiagnostics & Biotechnology:
• It has been demonstrated for the first time that anti-idiotypic antibodies raised against allergen specific idiotypic antibodies can substitute for the original allergen in the induction of allergen specific idiotypic antibodies, thus acting as surrogate allergens. Such surrogate allergens could find application in the diagnosis and treatment of specific IgE mediated allergic diseases.
• The major allergen from different crustacean foods has been identified for the first time as the muscle protein, tropomyosin and its IgE binding epitopes were delineated. Extensive cross-reactivity between different members of crustaceans has been attributed to the presence of highly conserved IgE binding epitopes on tropomyosin from these sources.
• Peptides encompassing the allergenic epitopes have been synthesized and these synthetic peptides were shown to bind to IgE antibodies in the sera of shrimp sensitive patients. This discovery opened up the possibility of developing synthetic vaccines for the treatment of allergic diseases.
• Development of a highly sensitive and specific ELISA based immunodiagnostic kit for the diagnosis of Invasive amoebiasis using recombinant antigens.
