Dr. Shylaja S S

Professor and Chairperson

Dr. Shylaja S S is a Professor and Chairperson in the Computer Science Department at PES University.

Dr. Shylaja S S is the Chairperson, Department of Computer Science and Engineering (UG Studies) at P E S University, Bangalore. She is also the Professor and Head, Department of CSE and Department of ISE at P E S Institute of Technology (PESIT), Bangalore. She completed her Bachelor’s degree from UVCE, Bangalore University in 1989, Master’s degree from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore University in 1993. She secured the First rank in the university in her M. Tech course. She completed the ‘C’ level course from DOEACC and holds a Ph.D in the domain of Face Recognition from Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). She has 28 years of teaching experience and 15 years of research experience. She has several journal articles, national and international conference publications to her credit. She has taught a plethora of courses and has guided several projects and research activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is a member of BOS of several organizations, reviewer of conferences and member of many technical committees.

Dr. Shylaja is heading two centers at P E S University, the Center for Data Sciences and Applied Machine Learning (CDSAML) and the Huawei Innovation Lab, facilitating research and internship opportunities for students and faculty members. Her research areas include Image Processing, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning.

● A specialized M.Tech Programme “Cyber Forensics and Information Security” proposed to VTU along with the syllabus. It was approved by VTU and AICTE and is now successful running at PESIT and a couple of other institutions. Syllabus for a postgraduate diploma course and a certificate course on “Cyber Forensics and Information Security” was also proposed to the Karnataka State Higher Education Council.
● Interaction with industries and academia in India and abroad for enhancing teaching, placements, industry grade projects and research.
● Expert member of Interview Panel for PESIT (West and South Campuses).
● Organizing and coordinating various workshops, distinguished lectures, seminars and International / National conferences at department and institution level.
● Enabling off-campus internships and placements.

Roles and Responsibilities as a Teacher

● Started and leading the Center for Data Sciences and Applied Machine Learning (CDSAML) to encourage students and faculty members to engage in active research.
● Started and leading the Huawei Innovation Lab to facilitate research and internship opportunities for students and faculty members.
● Emphasis on learner centric teaching with focus on blending theoretical concepts and practical exposure. Novel methods like discussion forums and peer-teaching used to help students learn team dynamics.
● Guided several academic and research projects, many of them leading to research publications. Pre-placement training and industrial visits organized and conducted for UG and PG students.
