SATELLITE DESIGN

(A Course in Pico/Nano/Micro-Satellites - PNMSats)

Objectives: As part of the short course, the participants will engage in learning the methods & processes for designing and experience hands on training in assembling, testing of PNMSat systems/subsystems.

  • Understand systems engineering approach to the design & development of PNMSats.
  • Review principles of Orbital Mechanics relevant to the design of PNMSats.
  • Understand the functions of various subsystems of a PNMSat and engage in their preliminary design.
  • Design, simulate & analyze PNMSat subsystems using one or more of the following tools:
    • MATLAB and/or Octave
    • CAD Tools
    • PCB Design Tools
    • Satellite/System Tool Kit and/or GMAT
  • Understand the development, integration and testing of PNMSats.

As part of the hands on training, the course will be taught using a classroom satellite kit from EyasSat, which has
all the subsystems of a satellite. The students will also learn to use satellite tracking, telemetry communication
(analog & digital) and conceptual understanding of telecommand operation.

Workshop1: Arduino Development

1 week training certificate of participation from PES University. Conducted by EEE Faculty

Exclusively for 4th Semester EEE students who have no prior courses taken on microcontroller and have some basic knowledge on ‘C’.

Number of seats was limited to 40 students, no more seats (Teams of 2 members will be formed. Max: 20 teams). Rs. 500/- for participation. However, at the end of workshop, students will continue to work on projects – 3 teams will get cash awards.owever, at the end of workshop, students will continue to work on projects – 3 teams will get cash awards.

Date: June 20th to June 25th, 2016.

Brief: Arduino boards are very popular today with students and hobbyists as it enables to build very simple system applications like basic light controls to complicated ones like interaction with mobile phones. This workshop is to introduce students to embedded systems and get to understand how to work out projects using Arduino and its integrated development environment. This skill helps you to build projects for the great ideas that you would have for systems in the areas of healthcare, IOT, robotics, consumer electronics and more.

Outcome of workshop: Students will be able to:
1) Write small scale programs in Embedded ‘C’
2) Hands-on with Arduino development environment
3) Build simple applications using timers, general purpose inputs and outputs
4) Interface sensors using ADC
5) Build a moving robot and control motors using PWM outputs.


Workshop2: Quadcopter Development

Number of seats: Minimum number expected to conduct this is: 20. Maximum: 40. First Come First Serve Basis (Teams of 5 members will be formed). Rs. 5500 + 14.5% taxes for each participant. A kit will be provided for each team.

Brief: Quadcopter is a multirotor air vehicle which has marked its interests for the benefit of both civil and military domains. It’s amazing manoeuvrability and the ease to fly in constricted locations has achieved itself a remarkable position in the aviation sector. A quadcopter, also called a quadrotor helicopter, quadrotor, is a multirotor helicopter that is lifted and propelled by four rotors. The workshop helps participants understand the concepts and use of accelerometer sensor, microcontrollers, microcontroller programming and wireless communication in designing and controlling a Quadcopter.

Outcome of workshop: Students will be able to:
1) Understand Quadcopter and its dynamics
2) Exposure to Design and concepts of Embedded Systems behind
Quadrotor
3) Fabrication of Quadcopter frame and its circuit
4) Calibration and Testing of the developed Quadcopter
5) Flying using radio control, 2016
