PES University follows outcome-based education in which each programme has identified sets of generic and programme specific outcomes based on the graduate attributes stipulated by statutory bodies such as NBA, UGC, COA, PCI, BCI etc., and professional bodies like the IET, UK. Each programme is designed with Programme Outcomes (POs) and approved by the Academic Council. The curricula of all programmes are framed in such a way that POs and Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs) are designed through core, elective, laboratory, project and mandatory courses. Courses are designed by the respective Boards of Studies with course outcomes aligned with the POs and PSOs and approved by the Academic Council.
Each programme has a course directory that contains POs, PSOs, scheme of study with credit structure, credit distribution and course contents. Course objectives, L-T-P-S-C structure, detailed syllabus, references, and course outcomes constitute the course content. The course directory is available online for ready access by faculty and students, and is also explained to the students in the introductory sessions of each course. Any revision in the curriculum and/or course content is updated in the course directory.
The course learning outcomes are phrased to enable measurable indicators of the learning, which can be assessed by formative and summative assessment as applicable using Rubrics. The ISA and ESA evaluation of each course are based on the stated learning outcomes. Question papers of both ISA and end-semester examinations, including laboratory courses, are set to assess the learning outcomes at appropriate cognitive levels in line with the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy (RBT), as required for the course.
For graduates of each degree program, PES University has defined a set of expected Graduate Attributes (GAs), ensuring that they are individually assessable outcomes indicative of graduates’ potential. The regulations of concerned Statutory Bodies have been heeded to, while stating GAs. For example, the GAs suggested by NBA have been considered while stating the same for UG and PG degrees in Engineering, PG degrees in Management, MCA degree, and UG degree and diploma in Pharmacy.
Course Outcomes (COs) have been defined for each of the courses as the narrower statements describing what students are expected to know and be able to do upon completion of a course. It is ensured that they relate to realistic, measurable skills, knowledge and behavior that students acquire through a course, and belong to levels 2, 3, and 4 in revised Bloom’s taxonomy.
PES University has adopted Outcome Based Assessment (OBA) approach as part of OBE, wherein evidence of evaluation of attainment of predefined outcomes is a basic requirement, enabling the University to be accountable and continuously improve.
Direct Methods:
Direct examination or observation of students’ knowledge or skills against measurable performance indicators – exams, assignments, tutorials, labs, presentations. Attainment of COs is evaluated by the In Semester Assessment(ISA) and end-semester Assessment(ESA) with equal weightage of 50%
ISA: It comprises 5 tests which are considered for computation each with 20% weightage. 10% weightage is given for assignments/ seminars/ quizzes. Each question in the test is mapped to the stated CO of the course
ESA : ESA is for 100 marks. . The question papers cover most of the COs and the total marks obtained in a course are converted to a letter grade.
Attainment of the POs and PSOs are also assessed in design project, mini project and capstone project. Detailed rubrics are employed to assess thoroughness of literature review, problem formulation, methodology, analysis of results and presentation. Team-working skills, individual contribution, and professional ethics are also assessed
The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) obtained by students at end of the programme is a measure of the attainment of POs and PSOs
Indirect methods:
Attainment of POs and PSOs is reflected in the continued success of students as assessed by various national and international agencies.
Fellowships and internships: Students have consistently secured the highest number of Indian Academy of Sciences Fellowships. In addition, students have secured prestigious international fellowships
Performance in competitive examinations: Students secure top ranks across disciplines in national level competitive examinations like GATE, CSIR-NET, etc. Performance in technical contests: The consistent and outstanding performances of students in competitions, hackathons, moot court contests, etc., reflect the attainment of higher order learning outcome
Research outcome: Students contribute to scientific publications and patents thereby demonstrating research acumen.
Campus Placement: Number of recruiters and offers has been consistently increasing every year. On an average, about 55% of graduates have been placed in the last 5 years
Higher studies: Due to the research ambience backed with strong academic inputs, students are able to secure admissions into premier institutions
